nologicaladvancesinthecomputerindustryowetheirinceptiontouniversity
researchcenters.Inordertoappreciatethecurrenttechnologicaladvancesinthe
computerindustry,onehastotracebackthroughthehistoryofcomputersand
theirdevelopment.Theobjectiveofsuchhistoricalreviewistounderstandthe
factorsaffectingcomputingasweknowittodayandhopefullytoforecastthe
futureofcomputation.Agreatmajorityofthecomputersofourdailyuseare
knownas generalpurpose machines.Thesearemachinesthatarebuiltwithno
specificapplicationinmind,butratherarecapableofperformingcomputation
neededbyadiversityofapplications.Thesemachinesaretobedistinguished
fromthosebuilttoserve(tailoredto)specificapplications.Thelatterareknown
as specialpurpose machines.AbriefhistoricalbackgroundisgiveninSection1.1.
Thetechnologicaladvanceswitnessedinthecomputerindustryaretheresultofa
